Harvard Chaplain brings Buddhist meditation to Boone
August 12th, 2018
Work obligations, school, bills and maintaining a family can become overwhelming. Meditation can help with that.
Harvard Buddhist chaplain Lama Migmar Tsteten brought his Buddhist teachings to the Art of Living Retreat Center at Heavenly Mountain from Aug. 3-5 for a meditation and mindfulness for inner peace and joy weekend retreat.
At an academically rigorous institution such as Harvard University, students may feel an immense pressure to succeed.
But in the Harvard Buddhist community, Lama Migmar and other interfaith chaplains focus on cultivating love, peace and mindfulness to help students overcome stressors, fears and struggles, or sufferings.
“Everybody has physical pain,” Lama Migmar said. “Everybody has mental suffering. Buddhism is to overcome those sufferings. Through the meditation practice, I can accept sufferings.”
Growing up as a Tibetan refugee, Lama Migmar’s meditation practice has helped him to overcome his own obstacles. In fact, his personal afflictions have enabled him to cultivate more compassion, Lama Migmar said.
Lama Migmar grew up practicing Buddhism in his family, but practiced it as a secular part of the culture. Later on, Lama Migmar attended a university in India and studied Buddhism, eventually continuing on to a monastery. At the monastery, Lama Migmar learned Buddhist practices and realized how transformative Buddhism was for him and how helpful it could be for others. From there, Lama Migmar dedicated his life to Buddhist practices.
When it comes to his own practice, Lama Migmar practices mindfulness, visualizations, reciting mantras, using mudras — hand gestures — and doing yoga.
“It is a practice to transform the whole person,” Lama Migmar said.
Buddhism is a way of life to Lama Migmar. Buddhist practice and teaching Buddhist practice leads to a “more wholesome life.” To reach that wholesome life, practitioners of Buddhism have to do two things: try to benefit others and do not harm others.
This foundation, as well as characteristics of love, compassion, peace and forgiveness can be found among many different faith groups, Lama Migmar said. Meditation is even incorporated in other religions as the practice has become more secular over time. Benefits such as stress reduction and improvement in memory and attention span have popularized the practice through the years, Lama Migmar said.
Whether Lama Migmar shares Buddhist meditation with Boone residents, Harvard University students or at a yoga retreat in the Bahamas, Buddhist teachings to harm less and live with compassion extend to everyone, Lama Migmar said.
“It is beyond culture, beyond nation and beyond race,” Lama Migmar said. “Wherever I go, those principles are the same.”

Ghantapada Shri Chakrasamvara Body Mandala Weekend Retreat
December 11th, 2016
We are very joyful with our auspicious annual Ghantapada Shri Chakrasamvara Body Mandala Weekend Retreat at Sakya Institute for Buddhist Studies in Cambridge, MA on December 10th and 11th, 2016. Participants came from Massachusetts as well as other cities within and outside the US to attend the retreat. The retreat will continue next year on December 9th and 10th, 2017 to learn more deeply into the profound Shri Chakrasamvara Body Mandala practice and discuss any questions we encounter as we do our daily practice throughout the year.
We also launched Mangalam Asian Art Preservation Project for 62 Deities of Shri Chakrasamvara Body Mandala last year. At present, there is no detailed picture of the 62 deities of Shri Chakrasamvara Mandala according to Ghantapada lineage from Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism. The thangkas that we aim to produce in this project will be used to publish books and practice materials to provide guidance and support for Shri Chakrasamvara and Vajrayogini practitioners in their daily practices. These paintings will be especially helpful to perfect our concentration and visualization practices, as well as understand more deeply the profound teachings of the Buddha embedded in each of the 62 Chakrasamvara deities. This project will cost $9,300 in total. More information about Mangalam Asian Art Preservation Project is provided below.

May 23rd, 2016
Lama Migmar will teach “Differences between Sutrayana and Tantrayana” at Ewam Choden on Thursday, June 16th, 2016 at 7:30 p.m.
Ewam Choden is very pleased to welcome back Khenpo Migmar Tseten to the Center. During his last visit, he taught on the Heart Sutra and on the Four Noble Truths. His teachings, in fluent English, are always clear and compassionate, combining straightforwardness for a beginner with depth for the more advanced student and practitioner. He kindly explains comprehensively and answers questions patiently.
Lama Migmar’s subject for this visit is the differences between Sutrayana (mdo’i-theg-pa) and Tantrayana or Vajrayana (rgyüd-kyi-theg-pa, rdo rje theg pa). Specifically, the topic is How four philosophical schools of Vaibhashika, Sautrantika, Chitamatrin and Madhyamika are relevant to the understanding and practice of four classes of Kriya, Charya, Yoga and Anutarayoga of Tantra.
ABOUT KHENPO MIGMAR TSETEN
Lama Migmar has been serving at Harvard University as a Buddhist Chaplain since 1997. Born in Tibet, he received both a traditional and a contemporary education in India. He graduated with an Acharya degree in 1979 from Tibetan Institute of Sanskrit University, Varanasi, India, with the first position among four schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Lama Migmar served as the head of Sakya Center in Rajpur, India, and the Sakya Monastery in Puruwalla, India, from 1981 to 1989, taking care of the well-being of several hundred monastic residents. During this time he reintroduced the original form of the geshe educational system of Tibet, with degrees from kazhipa up to the rabjampa degree, with a curriculum that included all of the eighteen major texts, which are known as the Dragchen Chogyed.

Lama Migmar will be leading Mangalam Svapna – The Yoga of Lucid Dreaming at Kripalu, MA. To register: https://kripalu.org/presenters-programs/mangalam-svapna-yoga-lucid-dreaming
For all levels.
Mangalam Svapna Yoga is an ancient Buddhist practice that transforms sleep into an opportunity for personal insight and spiritual growth. Practiced in Tibetan monasteries for more than 1,000 years, these practical techniques induce lucid dreams through a series of meditative visualizations practiced while falling asleep. Once mastered, these techniques can be used to improve sleep quality, receive spiritual teachings while dreaming, and develop insights into the nature of life, death, rebirth, and awakening.
This program includes
- A traditional Tibetan empowerment ceremony
- Instructions on the daily meditation practice of Green Tara
- Lectures on the importance of Dream Yoga in spiritual practice
- Specific visualizations to induce lucid dreams
- The opportunity to practice what you learn with short, guided meditations.
These practices cultivate a deeper sense of love and compassion for all sentient beings.
Note This program emphasizes mental yoga practices and meditative techniques; no asana is included in the sessions.

For everyone.
Healing Chöd is an ancient Buddhist ritual known for its power to alleviate physical, emotional, and mental illness and suffering. There are no instructions to follow or techniques to learn. One simply lies down, rests, and receives healing. Healing Chöd is suitable for everyone, including those with chronic or mild illnesses.
Healing Chöd rituals consist of music, prayers, and mantras in the sacred sounds of Sanskrit and Tibetan, transformative mudras and offerings, and meditation to cut through the destructive emotions and repel negative energies and obstacles. Empowerments are given to further increase healing blessings.
Dakini’s Heart-Essence Chöd is based on the female Buddha, Vajrayogini. It originated with the 10th-century Indian yogi Mahasiddha Naropa, and was passed down to Lama Migmar’s guru, Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, also the guru of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Mangalam Svapna Yoga is an ancient Buddhist practice that transforms sleep into an opportunity for personal insight and spiritual growth. Practiced in Tibetan monasteries for more than a thousand years, these practical techniques induce lucid dreams through a series of meditative visualizations practiced while falling asleep.
Note: This program emphasizes mental yoga practices and meditative techniques; no asana is included in the sessions.

Lama Migmar’s advice on “What does it mean to live a ‘successful’ life?”
November 25th, 2014
Lama Migmar was recently interviewed at Harvard Business School on “What does it mean to live a ‘successful’ life?” The following is the quote from the interview.
Advice to 25 year old self:
1. Be healthy. Emotionally and mentally you have to become strong. Before you can help others, you have to build emotional strength and inner peace.
2. Be wealthy. Wealth is having the ability to share. Inner wealth and outer wealth are both important. Tibet has lots of inner wealth and America has lots of outer wealth. You need both. Although inner wealth can overpower outer wealth as mind is stronger than body. Inner wealth includes loving-kindness, compassion and wisdom. Outer wealth includes access to water, air, earth and energy (fire). We can include money when it has purchasing power. Currency in itself does not have any intrinsic value – you can’t eat money. When my family moved from Tibet to India, the paper money we took with us was worthless.
3. Be beneficial to others. This means helping oneself and others. For example, by sharing and loving others. When you love someone, that makes them happy, this in turn will make you happy. Happiness is interdependent.
4. Live to bring purpose in your life. Consume to live and live to do something beneficial for oneself and others. Eat to live, rather than living to eat.
Other thoughts:
1. Loving-kindness is about wishing oneself and others well. Selfless love, like a mother’s love to a child, is when you love someone because you want them to be happy. Selfish love is when you love someone because they make you happy. Selfish love is uncertain.
2. Faith is about putting trust in something you don’t know; it is from the heart and not from the brain. The heart is stronger than the brain.
3. Being “present” requires memory / mindfulness and attention. People that remain in the present are more peaceful. When you think about the past you remember the pain or the pleasure. When you think about the future you dream of something that is not real.
4. Mind – The mind is stronger than the body. When the mind is calm you have less aggression and desire.
Three words for success:
1. Happiness
2. Freedom
3. Beneficial

Mahasiddha of the Month - Mahasiddha Zokipa
December 1st, 2018
We at Mangalam are working on Asian Art Preservation Project for 108 Mahasiddhas and Vajrayogini Naropa Lineage, and would like to ask you for your support. We need to raise fund for painting and brocading 84 Indian Mahasiddhas, 24 Togden Tibetan Mahasiddhas, Vajrayogini Naropa Lineage, and Shri Chakrasamvara Body Mandala Art Preservation Projects. We have completed 84 Indian Mahasiddha thangkas, and still need funding for 24 Togden Tibetan Mahasiddha thangkas, 45 Root and Lineage Gurus of Naropa Vajrayogini thangkas, and 62 Deities of Shri Chakrasamvara Body Mandala. These 108 Mahasiddhas and 45 Gurus are the source of the Vajrayana Buddhist teachings, meditations, and yantra yogas, including vayu, nadi, bliss, and mahamudra practices.
We will then use these paintings for various activities:
- Spiritual art exhibition where we will show the paintings of the 108 Mahasiddhas and 45 Gurus, share their inspiring life stories, teachings, and meditation practices.
- Creating spiritual videos and podcasts about the 108 Mahasiddhas and 45 Gurus that we will share for free on our websites (Mangalam Studio, 108 Mahasiddha, and Vajrayogini).
- Publishing books presenting the teachings and meditation practices taught by these 108 Mahasiddhas and 45 Gurus compiled from original sources. These books will also present color prints of the 108 Mahasiddhas and 45 Gurus. This project will also require translation of original sources from Tibetan and Sanskrit to English.
- Teachings and meditation practices at Buddhist centers.
One example of our previous Asian Art Preservation Project is 21 Tārā Art Preservation Project. Here, we commissioned painting and brocading thangkas of 22 female Buddhas, Green Tārā and 21 Tārā. These paintings were used for spiritual art exhibition at Sakya Institute for Buddhist Studies in Cambridge; publishing “Āryā Tārā Practice Manual”, which provides a complete set of texts and instructions for the practice of Tārā compiled from traditional sources, 22 color Tārā thangka pictures, and various Tārā paintings for visualization meditation aid (Mangalamkosha); sharing Tārā praises, mantras, and videos for free on our website (21 Tara); as well as studying, contemplating, and practicing Tārā meditation at various Tārā groups throughout the United States (Tara Groups).
We will not be able to complete this project without your support, and you can make a big impact by making a gift today. To date, our Asian Art Preservation Project has been shared in more than 130 countries in all four continents. If this project is valuable for you, please help us by making a donation using the following button. The donation can be made by credit card or PayPal.

Jetsun Rinpoche’s 800th year of Mahaparinirvana Anniversary
May 17th, 2016
We will celebrate the upcoming Lunar Monkey Year from February 8th in commemoration of one of the greatest Yogis of Tibet, Jestun Rinpoche Dakpa Gyaltsen on the advice of His Holiness the Sakya Trizin.
Jetsun Rinpoche’s 800th year of Mahaparinirvana Anniversary falls during this upcoming Monkey Year. During the year, we will share podcasts of Lama Migmar’s teachings on Jetsun Rinpoche’s Doha, the great Song of Spiritual Realizations.
Many masters have praised Jetsun Rinpoche’s Doha as the essence of Dzogchen, Mahamudra, and Great Madhyamika.

About this project
Keith Richardson has been recording my shows for more than 15 years. He has spent a year listening through the material and curating this collection. From eighty favorites we’ve selected 32 songs, 3 poems and some stories that capture the journey. I covered a whole lot of miles in these years but the real journey has always been about traveling in. These songs chart that course. Can’t wait to share them with you!

Ghantapada Shri Chakrasamvara Body Mandala Weekend Retreat
December 15th, 2015
We are very joyful with our auspicious launching of annual Ghantapada Shri Chakrasamvara Body Mandala Weekend Retreat at Sakya Institute for Buddhist Studies in Cambridge, MA on December 12th and 13th, 2015. Participants came from Massachusetts as well as far places, such as Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, Seattle, Washington DC, and New York to attend the retreat. The retreat will continue next year on December 10th and 11th, 2016 to learn more deeply into the profound Shri Chakrasamvara Body Mandala and discuss any questions we encounter as we do our daily practice throughout the year.
We also launched Mangalam Asian Art Preservation Project for 62 Deities of Shri Chakrasamvara Body Mandala.

Mangalam Yantra Yoga Classes Start Next Week in Needham Center
March 18th, 2015
Blue Lotus Healing Arts in Needham Center opens its yoga studio today and will start offering Mangalam Yantra Yoga classes next Tuesday, March 24th.
Mangalam Yantra Yoga explores how yoga practices from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition can be used to improve your health, transform emotional blockages, deepen your meditative experience and cultivate a deeper awareness of the true nature of your mind. Based on Mangalam Yantra Yoga, a practice originally introduced to Tibet by the Indian master Virupa in the 10th century, this class includes mantras, guided pranayama practices (Vayu Yoga) and the basics of Kaya Shuddhi—a set of simple physical postures designed to release energetic blockages and create more fluidity in the joints. Traditionally considered a secret teaching rarely taught outside of Tibetan monasteries, this class will give you an unparalleled opportunity to become part of an unbroken lineage of Yantra Yoga practitioners that extends over a millennium.
Guided by Mangalam Yantra Yoga instructor Susan Prentiss, this 75-minute class will be held on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 pm at Blue Lotus Healing Arts in Needham Center. The first class kicks off next week on March 24th.
Susan completed her 500-hour RYT certification under PranaVayu Yoga founder David Magone and received her Relax and Renew® Trainer certification in Restorative Yoga from Judith Hanson Lasater. She also holds certifications in Shamatha Calm-Abiding Meditation and Mangalam Yantra Yoga from Khenpo Migmar Tseten Rinpoche at the Harvard University Buddhist Chaplaincy.
Please note: Due to the emphasis on breath retention practices, this class is contraindicated for expectant mothers

ORAL TRANSMISSION OF THE CHAKRASAMVARA ROOT TANTRA (LAGHUSAMVARA)
March 18th, 2015
We are very excited and honored to announce that His Holiness the Sakya Trizin has assented to bestow the oral transmission of the Chakrasamvara Root Tantra at the request of Khenpo Migmar Tseten and the Sakya Institute for the benefit and blessings of all Chakrasamvara and Vajrayoginī practitioners. His Holiness will bestow the oral transmission after the Chakrasamvara Body Mandala Empowerment on April 12th, 2015. Tickets are still available. Please visit www.sakya.net to purchase the tickets and for more details.
There exists a very special lineage of the practice and explanation of the Chakrasamvara tantra held called “The Ultimate Secret”. The Ultimate Secret is the special oral instructions on the Chakrasamvara system which comes from Mahāsiddha Naropa and was only passed onto his Nepalese disciple, Abhayakīrti of modern day Pharping (Phaimting), Nepal, whose Vajrayoginī temple still exists today.
Guru Abhayakīrti in turn transmitted the Root Tantra to Mal Lotsawa Lodo Dragpa seventy-three times. Each time it was transmitted, Mal Lotsawa offered a ganacakra. Guru Abhayakīrti also directly gave Mal Lotsawa the transmissions for the Ultimate Secret system, including the three main traditions of Chakrasamvara, Luipa, Ghantapāda and Krishnacarya, as well as the transmission for Naropa’s Khechari. Mal Lotsawa also translated the root tantra with the Nepalese master, Sumatikirti.
Towards the end of Mal Lotsawa’s life, he met Sachen Kungpa Nyingpo to whom he granted all his teachings, including the eight deity Mahākala that is the main protector practice of the Sakyapa school. Thus Sachen became the main heir of the Ultimate Secret system.
Sachen Kunga Nyingpo in turn wrote three texts on the Chakrasamvara Root Tantra from the point of view of the Ultimate Secret system: an outline, a selection of difficult points and a word by word commentary on the entire text. He also passed on all the teachings of the Ultimate Secret system to his sons and lineage holders, Loppon Rinpoche and Jetsun Rinpoche.

Nirvana Stupa in memory of Khenpo Lama Migmar’s late mother, Sonam Yudon
November 24th, 2013
Nirvana Stupa was erected on November 24th, 2012 in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA. Sonam Yudon’s five children, led by her two eldest sons Khenpo Lama Migmar and Trinley Tsewang, dedicated the stupa to their late mother on her anniversary. It has quickly become an object for prayer, meditation, and mantra recitation for New England’s Buddhist community. Each of the four sides of the stupa is engraved with the Green Tara mantra to receive healing to overcome suffering, and the Avalokiteshvara mantra to cultivate loving kindness, compassion, and wisdom. Khenpo Lama Migmar says of the memorial, “May whoever comes into contact with this Nirvana Stupa further develop these inner qualities of love, compassion, and wisdom.”

In Memory of Sakya Khenchen Rinchen Zangpo Rinpoche: the Heart Master of Khenpo Migmar
October 15th, 2013

Khenpo Rinchen
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has praised Khenpo Rinchen repeatedly during the empowerments and teachings at Bodhgaya in India, Lerab Ling in France, Ladakh in India, and Sarnath, Varanasi in India,
“Khenpo Rinchen is the only Khenpo who has mastered the scholarships of Sakya, Kagyu, Gelug, and Nyingma.”
Many of the present Khenpos and Teachers of Sakya, Nyingma, and Kagyu are his students.
Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro’s upadesha to his heart disciple Sakya Khenchen Rinchen Zangpo,
“The profound essence of the most profound Dharma Dzogpa Chenpo, obtained from the kind blessings of the Guru, and the Wish Fulfilling Lamdre, the oral lineage Dharma of Shri Virupa, ultimately agree on the same essential point. They differ only in method of gradual and sudden instructions. Further, give up bias about different schools.”
Then Khenchen Rinpoche Rinchen Zangpo requested his Guru for divination about his practice, and received instruction
“Practice Madhyamika, Mahamudra, and Dzogchen combined into one.
Support Mangalamkosha Publications
November 15th, 2013
This has been an exciting year for Mangalamkosha Publications. In 2013 we celebrated the release of three volumes of commentary on the mystical songs of Mahasiddha Virupa.
These recent publications mark the beginning of a very productive time here at Mangalamkosha. Khenpo Lama Migmar has already commenced work on his next book entitled “Awakening To The Noble Truth”, which will be an extensive explanation on the Four Noble Truths including the sixteen aspects relating to those vital Buddhist teachings.
We are currently planning to release ten books between January 2014 and February 2017. These will include a commentary on the essence of the “Heart Sutra”, an explanation on “The Thirty-seven Noble Path” as well as “The Seven Noble Wealth” and three volumes of teachings on Jetsun Rinpoche Dragpa Gyaltsen’s profound songs of experience which will be called “Doha, The Great Song Of Awakening”. We plan to publish a study of the “Thirty-seven Bodhisattva Path”, as well as a book detailing the “One Hundred and Eight Mahisiddhas”. We are also in the process of completing a book on the “Twenty-one Taras” complete with full color reprints of the Tara thangkas which Lama Migmar recently commissioned.
Our translators have also been hard at work this year. We have already completed translations of Mahasiddha Virupa’s “Amritasiddhi” and are currently translating “Yoginisancharya”. In the year ahead we will translate Mal Lotsawa’s “Lagu Samvara”, the condensed root tantra of Chakrasamvara, the most important text in the Sakya Tradition is the translation of this text done by Mal Lotsawa Lodo Dragpa. This text was then transmitted to Sachen Kungpa Nyingpo. Sachen then wrote a detailed commentary on this tantra, the first in Tibetan. Later, Sakya masters, such as Amyezhabs, also composed important commentaries on this version. We are planning to translate Mal Lotsawa’s Laghusamvara into English. Next, we are planning to translate the self-intiation texts of both the Ghantapada Chakrasamvara and the Naropa’s Vajrayogini into English. Finally, we are going to translate the fire puja of Naropa’s Vajrayogini, which is essential for completing the basic approach retreat of Vajrayogini. We hope to provide a complete library of original Sakya Tradition texts for the practice of the Ghantapada Chakrasamvara tradition and Naropa’s Vajrayogini tradition. There are many important texts necessary for the practice of these profound paths.
We have extensive work to do transcribing, translating, arranging and editing all of these manuscripts before they can be published. We will also need to hire professional graphic designers to bring these projects to completion.
We invite you to participate in making these precious teachings widely available by supporting our efforts through your generous donations. Please use the following PayPal button for donation.
With gratitude,
